The interdisciplinary project "Metageography. Space - image - action"

Сurators: Kirill Svetliakov, Nikolai Smirnov. Scientific adviser: Dmitry Zamyatin

This project is dedicated to the problems of meta-geography - the field of knowledge, which is located at the intersection of philosophy, art and science. Since the late 1960s, when they started regular air service and made the first pictures of Earth from space, notions of space and time boundaries of local and global, the categories of "distant" and "close", "inside" and "outside" have undergone a radical revision. Currently, the process of globalization induces a new experience, modeling and representation of space in which the subject is also forced to re-construct themselves. The project brings together the expertise of geographers and artists belonging to three generations of Russian Art 1960-2000-ies. The project works of contemporary art will be compared with historical maps and geodetic instruments of the Historical Museum and Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography. On a conceptual level, the ongoing processes are conceptualized within the scope of post-geography or metageography. These are new paradigms in which all geographical space is interpreted as “invented” and constructed. Fundamental, primary attention is given to the visualization and conceptualization of space and, accordingly, of a human being. The difference between these paradigms is that post-geography is more directed toward the analysis and deconstruction of geographical “ruins,” while metageography focuses on the process of the creation and functioning of multiple geographical forms.

"Metageography. Space - image - action" is complex and intelligent exhibition, which combines elements of art, science and philosophy. Guattari, Deleuze says that people are more inclined to see the world in terms of maps, imaginary spaces, able to visualize all forms of linkages and relationships. Cartography is becoming a new form of mental culture.Curators have made clear to us is the variety of mental images of space combining art and geopolitics. Maps are becoming by images of the opportunity, by virtual phenomena, fixing the past and present, which manifests the future itself. The perfect embodiment of the curatorial idea.
