Moscow Conceptualism: The Beginning

Yuri Albert

Moscow Conceptualism is one of the significant phenomena of Russian art. Despite the fact that it has long been considered a classic, its early history has not yet been adequately studied. Our understanding of it is more of a myth than precise knowledge. Curator Yuri Albert refers to the origins of Moscow Conceptualism, to the first decade of its existence, clearly delineating the range of participating artists. In selecting the works and conversing with their authors Albert poses the principle question in Russian art criticism: “Why is what we did and many of us still do called conceptualism?” The exhibited items include graphic and painted works, photographs, documentation of actions, texts, among which a number of works were shown for the first time.
