28.06 - 20.09.2012

The St Petersburg branch of the National Centre for Contemporary Arts and Iris New Holland present
a joint public art project of Michael Beitz (USA) and young artists of the Pro Arte Foundation

American sculptor and artist Michael Beitz gave a series of master classes in St Petersburg from 28 June to 6 July 2012. He was also a fellow of the NCCA Kronshtadt artist-in-residence programme where he worked in cooperation with 15 students of the Pro Arte School for Young Artists.

The master class was based on Beitz’ famous series in which he placed the casts of the parts of his body in urban environment. The artists were working on New Holland island in St Petersburg. They consumed 60 kilos of cement, 60 kilos of plaster, 5 kilos of clay, 10 cartridges of silicone, and 15 kilos of dental alginite. The collective project reflects on the interaction between the city and its dwellers. The artists created a few objects and scattered them on the island; you will need a special map to find them all.
