CYFEST is one of the largest international media art festivals, it was founded in St. Petersburg in 2007 by independent artists and curators. The festival promotes the emergence of new forms of art and high technology interactions, developing professional connections between artists, curators, engineers and programmers around the world and exposing wide audiences to the works in the field of robotics, video art, sound art and net art.
11th CYFEST’s projects in 2017 were exhibited in principal exhibition venues of Moscow, New York, Beijing and Rome. In 2019 festival is taking place in Saint Petersburg in February 2-12.
Festival’s partners in Saint Petersburg are classical and experimental cultural institutions; among them Saint Petersburg Stieglitz State Academy of Art and Design, Youth Educational Center at the State Hermitage, Saint Petersburg Sound Museum, Art Center Pushkinskaya-10, Annenkirche (St. Anna’s Lutheran Church) and Sreda Space.
The main project of CYFEST 11 is named “Weather Forecast: Digital Cloudiness”. Digital clouds are storages without forms and borders. There are private, public and hybrid clouds. The otherworld is built, new atmosphere for existence of information in our lives is created. In August 2006 started Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) project and almost at once terms «cloud» and «cloud computing» appeared in one of speeches of Eric Schmidt, head of Google. Since then we have been seeing numerous references to cloud computing in mass media and scientific publications of experts of Information Technology.
Observing evolution of cloud technologies and adapting scientific discoveries to creative processes 80 artists from 10 countries offer their own “weather forecast” to public in Saint Petersburg. Honorary participants are the winners of prestigious International Festival The Lumen Prize and Leonardo: International Society for Arts, Sciences and Technology, italian multidisciplinary artist Marco Nereo Rotelli, one of the leaders of russian science art Where Dogs Run Group and many other artists.
“We suggest to refer to changes in Information Technologies, that have become a part of our life, as we would to the weather forecast. They affect our everyday life directly and we have no levers of influence on them” — the Festival curator Elena Gubanova emphasizes.
11th CYFEST in Saint Petersburg is organized by CYLAND MediaArtLab with the assistance of the North-West Branch of National Center for Contemporary Arts as part of the ROSIZO Center with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation.
