  “Heritage in the Contemporary Context”

Exhibition at the State Museum of the History of St Petersburg
(Peter and Paul Fortress, Poterna Exhibition Hall)

The exhibition is dedicated to contemporary museum architecture showing how 19th-20th century architectural monuments are being remodeled to house centers for contemporary art. The Exhibition features three projects for National Center for Contemporary Arts (NCCA) buildings in Nizhny Novgorod, Kaliningrad and Samara. In Nizhny Novgorod it took more than a decade to restore and refurbish the mid-19th century Arsenal building of the local Kremlin, and in 2015 Museum of the NCCA Volga-Vyatka Region Branch welcomed its first visitors. At present a tower and mansard of the Kronprinz barracks (mid-19th century) in Kaliningrad are being redeveloped and restored to house a new space for the NCCA Baltic Branch; the opening is scheduled for 2017. A restoration project has been developed for the unique Factory Kitchen constructivist building in Samara (1932) – the building will house the NCCA Central Volga Branch.

NCCA is a network institution that started working in Moscow in 1994 offering projects in contemporary art, and in 1995-2015 opened its branches in seven major cultural centers of Russia, such as St. Petersburg, Ekaterinburg, Kaliningrad, Nizhnii Novgorod, Samara, Tomsk and Vladikavkaz.

Design: KHVOYA Architecture Bureau (St Petersburg)

KHVOYA Architecture Bureau is a small architectural studio founded in 2009 by three graduates of the Repin Academy of Fine Arts. In 2009-2014 the architects also worked at Studio 44 and AM-TRI studios, and since 2015 have been focusing on their own projects. The Bureau has set up Tikhy Chas creative association (www.quiet-time.ru) – a paper architecture project, and LES Architects Studio (www.lesarchitects.com) – a joint project with ARCHATAKA Studio.
