Artist Talk: Ditte Knus Tønnesen and Asle Lauvland Pettersen (Denmark-Norway)

At the artist talk artists Ditte Knus Tønnesen and Asle Lauvland Pettersen will speak about their art practice and present their art project “Forgotten Art” on which they are working at the NCCA Art Residence in Kronstadt. It aims to explore forgotten art that is not shown anymore because of economic, historical, political or other reasons. Artists would like to find examples of public art works left in abandoned factories, offices, schools, etc. that are permanently stored because of lack of space or have never been exhibited by other reasons. They also would like to investigate art that was trashed by individuals. “The common destiny of these forgotten art works is always an equally fascinating history of how they were created, how they lived and influenced people and why they were forgotten. In light of the story of the forgotten art we would like to focus on art and artist's role in society. Is art stays art when it is no longer in contact with its audience?”

Ditte Knus Tønnesen (b. 1982) is a Danish artist working with photography, video, objects and installations. Working in a field between images and spatial constructions she tests and investigates how different interpretations and world views become the accepted understanding of things – and how our understanding of ‘reality’ depends on our context, culture, religion and political standpoints. Knus Tønnesen graduated from The Glasgow School of Art (UK) and Kyoto Seika University (Japan) in 2008. In 2011 she founded GREEN IS GOLD an artist-run, non-profit exhibition room & publisher house in the old part of Copenhagen together with artist Amalie Bønnelycke Lunøe. Asle Lauvland Pettersen (b. 1978) is a Norwegian artist and theater set designer whose work consists of conceptual, fundamental installations. In Pettersen’s practice, video, objects and performances are often combined with an expression of almost dogmatic conceptual ideas. An equal amount of technology, and an almost naive aesthetic, provides his work with a tempting surface, but as the layers are deconstructed more universes and questions emerge, which encourage the audience to respond and react to. Concepts of existentialism and ecological philosophy are often found to be important elements of Petersen’s work. Asle Lauvland Pettersen graduated from Oslo National Academy of Arts (Norway), Scenography and Fine Art Departments. Artist’s website:
