“Cabinet of Curiosities: Open House” exhibition

Artists: Alexandra Zubritskaya (St. Petersburg), Asya Marakulina (St. Petersburg), Anastasiya Kizilova (St. Petersburg), Lera Lerner (St. Petersburg), Natalya Tikhonova (St. Petersburg), Titta Aaltonen (Helsinki)

The exhibition is an opportunity to have a glimpse into the work of a collaborative program for students of the Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki and the School for the Young Artists - Pro Arte Foundation/National Center for Contemporary Arts, St Petersburg which took place in the autumn of 2014.

In September-October 2014 “Cabinet of Curiosities” project was held for the second time. A group of 5 Russian and 4 Finnish young artists spent 9 days in St. Petersburg and 9 days in Helsinki. In each city students of the program participated in master-classes of Russian and foreign artists, also attended lectures and excursions, which helped to get acquainted with the local artistic context. In St. Petersburg, master-class was held by Russian-Ukrainian artist Sergey Bratkov and curator Alina Belishkina, in Helsinki - Finnish artist Anu Pennanen.

«Cabinet of Curiosities» is a project aimed at establishing dialogue between art-communities of two Northern capitals with a hope of a long-term fruitful partnership in the future. At present both Russian and Finnish artists are rather focusing on their local context, Central and Western European or American art scene. Art communities of the two neighbor countries not only lack knowledge about each other’s culture but are not used to communication and interaction. The mission of the Project is to create a dynamic environment, enable dialogue between young artists that could later serve a basis for long-term professional cooperation in art.
