The Shchusev State Museum of Architecture
within the St. Petersburg Biennale of Museum Design
November 14 – December 14, 2014
In February 2013 the Shchusev State Museum of Architecture with the support of Moscow Committee of Architecture and Urban Development held a competition for the best concept of a museum cluster – a public urban space in the very center of Moscow (within the area between Borovitskaya square, intersection of Mokhovaya and Znamenka streets, Vozdvizhenka street and Krestovozdvizhenskiy alley). The purpose of this competition was to raise awareness of the problems that Moscow’s historical center is facing and help find new resources to address them.
The task for the participants of this competition was to design a network of walking-tour routes and art-spaces that would link together main architectural landmarks within walking distance from each other and create an urban space that is both convenient and friendly, a “museum cluster” that could become Moscow’s new symbol. Such spaces are integral part of city life in a number of world’s cultural centers, such as Stockholm, Madrid and Vienna, and attract tourists from across the world.
Ideas for tapping the potential of Moscow’s historical center and turning it into a place of artistic excellence submitted to the competition were first presented to the public at Shchusev
