The exhibition is an opportunity to have a glimpse into the work of a collaborative program for students of the Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki and the School for young Artists - Pro Arte Foundation / National Center for Contemporary Arts, St Petersburg which took place in the spring of 2013.
The aim of this program was to continue building bridges between the artistic communities of these two Northern Capitals with the hopes that they will grow into fruitful long term dialogues and interchanges. While during the 19th century dialogue and working across the border was quite common in the Finnish and Northern Russian art communities, these days artists from both contexts tend to look to central European capitals and New York City. Neither community seems to have the knowledge of their geographical neighbors nor the habit of communicating with each other. By creating the framework for a dialogue between students of art, we at the Academy and Pro Arte/NCCA hoped to create the roots for a fluid exchange between the two arts communities on the professional level for the long term.
The program in spring 2013 invited Finnish students to spend 9 days in St Petersburg and Russian Students 9 days in Helsinki working with one another. In each city the Finnish/Russian group of students studied with professional artists from each respective community. In Helsinki students worked with Helsinki based Argentinian artist Axel Srachnoy, and had lectures and conversations with Tellervo Kallenien, Paula Toppila of IHME and Checkpoint Helsinki. In St Petersburg students worked with Paris based Russian artist Olga Kisseleva, theorist Alina Belishkina as well as hearing lectures by art historians Olesya Turkina from The State Russian Museum, Petersburg and Evgenia Kikodze from Moscow. Excursions were also organized in both cities, allowing students to become familiar with local artists exhibition venues and histories.
