«THE FIRST ON MARS»
The exhibition of young artists

14-22, May 2011. 19A, Dobrolyubova str.

«Nowadays there are not so many phenomena that we can call topical. There is no doubt that the space exploration is one of such phenomena, because every new generation creates its own images and interpretations. In honour of the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s flight, 2011 is named the Year of The Russian Cosmonautics. There have already been a lot of events and exhibitions dedicated to those celebrated days. In our turn we ask the artists of the exhibition not only to think over the past, but also give thought to the future. Those, who were born in the 1980s, are acquainted with heroic conquerors of the Universe through legends and TV-stories that have already become canonical. Developing the subject, the young artists act as “resuscitators” of the Soviet collective memory about space exploration and conquest and also create unusual images of heroes and events, make contemporary myths and legends.
Our exhibition is an attempt to revive the events of the Age of Space Exploration not by the means of museum reconstruction methods, but with the help of the language of contemporary art. Each work exposed at the exhibition is an invitation to the adventure through space and time».

The exhibition «The First on Mars» is closely tied with the educational program of the Ekaterinburg Branch of the NCCA. Within the project ART-PREPARATION (with the support of NTSPI) started in 2011 the students of the art and graphics department – the young artists – familiarize themselves with contemporary art theories and practices and learn to speak the eloquent language of contemporary art. At the exhibition «The First on Mars» the works of these young artists will be shown for the first time. In addition, some works were chosen during the contest held by the Ekaterinburg Branch of the NCCA: everyone could bring their works to take part in the exhibition.

Among the participants there are young artists from Ekaterinburg, Nizhny Tagil, Perm, Nevyansk and special guests from Germany, Saint-Petersburg and Krasnoyarsk.

At the exhibition you can see works made in different genres of contemporary art, such as video, installation, sculpture, painting, photography. All of them were made specially for this exhibition.
