The exhibition will present the results of exchange programme between Kaliningrad and Ahrenshoop for the last five years. In course of the programme, artists from Germany and Russia studied distinctive features of the cities and their culture, and got acquainted with local artistic and literary communities. «Another» realities will be presented in form of photographs, texts, video and sound installations, artist books and dance performances.
The exhibition focuses on art residence as one of organizational forms of artistic work (in distinction from work in studio or en plein air), examining its results by means of visual anthropology. Such an approach is closely linked not only to awareness of vision of “other”, “alien” or “new”, but also to the possibility of presenting the contents of exhibition as elements of self-referential descriptions, which every society creates in regard to itself and its limits. It is thanks to self-description, which is possible only in communication, that society and its representatives, artists, depict themselves. In Constructed Situations, descriptions and self-descriptions mutually penetrate each other so that one cannot definitely tell if artists speak about «non-native» reality or about themselves, falling into automatisms of perception.
The very title of exhibition as if reminds us that artistic statements and the exhibition, where artworks, enclosed and united, complement each other while being juxtaposed – is a result of inevitable and intentional construction of signs, meanings and meaningful spaces.
The exchange programme is realized by Baltic Branch of NCCA, Neues Kunsthaus Ahrenshoop and Künstlerhaus Lukas in Ahrenshoop since 2006. During that time art residencies in Ahrenshoop and Kaliningrad were visited by 44 German and Russian artists. The exhibition will also take place in Neues Kunsthaus Ahrenshoop in December 2017.
