Exhibition of the Nominees and Winners
of the VIII All-Russian Contemporary Visual Art Competition
The INNOVATION in the Arsenal brings together the best of what happened in the Russian contemporary art in 2012. Rich in content and spectacular, the exhibition presents to the Nizhny Novgorod audience a unique opportunity to see the works of artists, photo and video documentation of curatorial projects, catalogues and theoretical publications.
The INNOVATION competition determines winners in each of five nominations: “Work of Visual Art”, “Curatorial Project”, “Regional Project”, “New Generation”, “Art Theory and Criticism”. The exhibition will present 25 works which were shortlisted out of 310 submitted by applicants from 24 regions.
About INNOVATION competition
INOVATION is an annual competition organized by the National Centre for Contemporary Arts (Moscow) with support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. The competition is aimed to promote and support Russian artists and cultural entrepreneurs, to identify main tendencies and achievements in Russian contemporary art. The competition is held in two stages. In the first one the Expert Committee determines a shortlist, in the second – the Jury selects winners. Nominations of the INNOVATION competition: “Work of Visual Art”, “Curatorial Project”, “Art Theory and Criticism”, “Regional Project of Contemporary Art”, “New Generation”. Out-of-competition nominations: “For the Creative Contribution to Development of Contemporary Art”, “For the Support of Russian Contemporary Art”. The competition’s laureates are awarded with special prizes, money awards and diplomas.
About INNOVATION exhibition
The INNOVATION exhibition was on display in Moscow in spring 2013. It traveled to Nizhny Novgorod with insignificant changes – for instance, artists of the “Barbarian” project altered their work specifically for the Arsenal space. Some of the exhibition’s participants are already known to the Nizhny Novgorod audience: the exhibition “Moscow Conceptualism. The Beginning” (curator Yury Albert) was selected for the shortlist of the INNOVATION competition in “Curatorial Project” nomination, and “Marevo” opera of the Nizhny Novgorod artists Provmyza won the “Work of Visual Art” nomination. The exhibition also includes works of authors from Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Voronezh, Krasnodar, Vladikavkaz, presenting geography of the contemporary art in Russia.

The exhibition includes works of the following artists: Anna Zholud, Arseny Zhilyaev, Dmitry Morozov, Ivan Plusch, Vladimir Seleznev, Leonid Tishkov, Radya, ZIP Group (Stepan Subbotin, Vassily Subbotin, Evgeny Rimkevich) and KISI (Viktor Linsky, Yulia Kapustyan, Alexander Likhanov), PROVMYZA Group, Barbarians project: Pavel Akimov, Evgenia Balantseva, Igor Baranchuk, Dmitry Venkov, Sofia Gavrilova, Evgenia Demina, Maria Doronina, Alexey Korsi, Mikhail Maksimov, Alexander Polevoy, Nikon Filipov, Sofia Filipova, Anna Khodorkovskaya, Olga Shirokostup, "Up!" Group, as well as curators and theorists presentating of their exhibitions, researches and cultural projects of the year 2012.
