Woman in Action

The Woman in Action annual festival is dedicated to gender practices and “female” initiatives in contemporary culture. The festival consists of two parts: arts management educational and debate platform, and contemporary art of various genres.
In 2013 the arts management part is related to art clusters; Alina Saprykina (Moscow), director of the ARTPLAY center of design and architecture, and winner of the Kariatida-2012 award, will speak about methods of the clusters’ formation, development and promotion.
Artistic section of the festival is dedicated to historical falsifications and “mythologisation” of gender roles in contemporary art.
From March 30 till May 19 the Bestiary exhibition will be on display. It offers an insight into the present of Russia through the prism of the European Middle Ages.
From April 14 till May 12 a project created especially for the festival – video “Mermaids” of Antonina Baever (Moscow) – will be shown non-stop in the “Under the Arches” hall. The artist compares “commercialization” of a modern woman’s life with mythological stories about rusalkas (18+).
14 April, Sunday – the Festival’s culmination, during this day a marathon of events will take place in the Arsenal.
12.00 - 20.00 – Resistance of Materials exhibition. Photo project of Alik Yakubovich (Nizhny Novgorod) based on performance of Elena Kovylina. The exhibition will be on display at the Arsenal Café until May 12.
13.00 - 19.00 – textile jewelry art workshops for children and adults.
13.00 – 20.00 – Play ARTPLAY architecture and design exhibition.
16.00 – 16.45 – presentation of a new city project Play ARTPLAY (Moscow).
17.00 – 17.45 - presentation of the ARTPLAY center of design and architecture (Moscow) by director of the center Alina Saprykina.
19.00 - 19.45 – Kariatida award ceremony – the award for young female art managers, including special prize from the “Delovoy Kvartal” magazine. Musical interactive performance in honor of the winners by composer Veronika Zatul (Moscow).
Tickets for all events of the day – 150 rub.
“Civilization XX” exhibition-stage performance by the French director Judith Depaule will be premiered in the frames of the festival. The performance guides the audience through archaeological exposition comprised of artifacts of the ancient women civilization which existed between the 4th and the 3rd millennium BC on the territory of the modern Khakassia (18+).
The performance will be shown in the Arsenal from April 19 till May 12.
Schedule: Tuesday-Friday at 19.00, Saturday-Sunday at 18.00.
April 20 at 14.00 – “Woman in action: immortality genome” debate. Authorial project of a candidate of philosophical sciences, sociologist Yulia Yushkova-Borisova (18+).
April 24 at 19.00 – “Music of a different gender” concert, NoName-Ensemble (Nizhny Novgorod) will perform contemporary academic music of female composers.
