Vanitas: Contemporary Reflections

Richard Kuiper. The Egg. 2010. Courtesy Look4art Amsterdam

The show will present a contemporary visual and philosophical reflection on the Vanitas tradition which originated in Dutch and Flemish art in the XVII century. It has an aim of explaining and demonstrating its important cultural heritage to the Russian audience.

Vanitas paintings originally created a vocabulary of their own: each object, had its meaning which enabled each painting to tell a story. The symbolism will be explained at the show and within the framework of interactive events which are to follow it. The show will contain the modern day Vanitas message expressed in the works of Contemporary European artists , which have interpreted and developed its original symbols and metaphors into modern language. Nevertheless their versions and interpretation of Vanitas evoke same timeless questions, which are so relevant for today’s Russia.
