Moscow Conceptualism is one of the most significant movements of the Russian art. Despite the fact that it has been considered to be classic for quite some time, initial period of its history is still unclear and unstudied, what we know about it is rather myths. It may be said that all art movements, from Impressionism to Arte Povera and Moscow Actionism, are merely beautiful legends, but they are based on real facts which can be discussed.
The exposition in the Arsenal combines artworks from the 1970s by the famous Moscow conceptual artists: N. Alekseev, E. Bulatov, V. Gerlovin and R. Gerlovina, “The NEST” group (G. Donskoy, M. Roshal, V. Skersis), I. Kabakov, V. Komar and A. Melamid, “Collective Actions” group, I. Makarevich, A. Monastyrskiy, V. Nekrasov, D. Pirogov, L. Rubinstein and I. Chuikov.
The Nizhny Novgorod project is unique as its curator is an artist-conceptualist – Yuri Albert, knowing creative process from the inside. His acquaintance with the artists-conceptualists which at the time represented non-official art took place when he studied at school. The exhibition is characterized by a rather narrow approach – only one decade and limited circle of artists. Among the artworks represented in the Arsenal exhibition hall – objects, graphic, paintings, photographs, actions documentation, texts – some works will be displayed for the first time.
The ceremony of opening will take place on the 28th of September at 19:00.
