COMMUNAL AVANT-GARDE PROJECT
The Arsenal 9 November 2011 – 10 January 2012
The exhibition project “Communal Avant-garde” is dedicated to the two largest Russian socio-architectural utopias of the first half of the 21st century: the Russian avant-garde and the “Stalin style” which found its reflection in the architecture and social construction of the end of the 1920s – beginning of the 1930s. The research subject is the Soviet social town (Sotsgorod) as a bright example of complex approach to creation of a new man and a new way of life.
The project consists of three parts: the art exhibition, the guide to the GAZ (Nizhny Novgorod) and Uralmash (Ekaterinburg) social towns, and the “New City” open laboratory.
A total installation will be presented at the “Communal Avant-garde” art exhibition – model of an ideal city of the future, created in the exposition space from photo and audio materials which were collected at the sites of GAZ and Uralmash. Authors of the installation - artist Vladislav Efimov, photographer Sergey Leontiev and composer Georgy Stefanov.
The living “new city” built by the artists leaves it to the audience to puzzle out where is a boundary between avant-garde and totalitarian style, reality and phantom, constructive innovations and utopia.
Detailed information about the buildings on which the exhibition is focused can be found in the catalogue-guide, a unique edition, where for the first time guided tours of the Nizhny Novgorod and Ekaterinburg social towns will be published.
The “New City” open laboratory will be open in the Arsenal during the art exhibition. There the audience will have an opportunity to examine architectural and sociological publications, to participate in opinion polls and creative experiments on topic of socio-architectural utopias of the past and the future.
