'The Tension is Growing. Selected Works from the PERMM Museum Collection'

April 11 — June 30, 2019

The Arsenal launches a series of the exhibitions devoted to the XX – XXI centuries art from the collections of leading Russian museums. Thanks to the interregional partnership and collaboration with curators and artists from other regions, the Nizhny Novgorod audiences will see the most relevant and iconic contemporary art projects from other Russian cities, without having to leave.

The exhibition 'The Tension is Growing. Selected Works from the PERMM Museum Collection' represents the largest Russian regional collection of contemporary art. Its signature objects are large-scale installations that will beautifully fit into the Arsenal spacious halls. The exhibition, prepared jointly with the PERMM curators, will introduce the iconic names and works of the 2000s Russian art to the Nizhny Novgorod audiences. The title 'The Tension is Growing' is borrowed from the eponymous work by Ekaterinburg artist Timofey Radya, which will also be presented at the exhibition.

Artists: Said Atabekov, Babi Badalov, Peter Bely, Sergey Gorshkov, Valery Koshlyakov, Vadim Mikhailov, the Soap (Mylo) group, Yuri Nikiforov, Dmitry Petukhov, Vitaly Pushnitsky, Timofey Radya, Leonid Sokol, Anastasia Ulanova, Olga and Alexander Florensky, Sergey Shekhovtsov, Yury Shtapakov.

Background information. The Perm Museum of Contemporary Art / PERMM is a state contemporary art museum, created in Perm in 2009. The museum’s collecting strategy aims to form an integral collection of artistic phenomena united by the concept of the ‘Russian arte povera’, i.e. works created by the Russian artists with non-artistic, non-traditional, 'poor' materials: unbaked clay, sand, packing tape, foam rubber, cardboard, etc. PERMM keeps a unique collection of The Moscow Archive of New Art, donated to the museum by Senator Sergey Gordeyev. This body of texts, art objects, photographs and documentation represents the early, pre-commercial stage of the Moscow conceptualism.

Curator: Nailya Allahverdiyeva, art director of the PERMM Museum of Contemporary Art.
