Discovering the Landscape

April 05 – August 26, 2018

The two-part exhibition researches the collective image of new landscapes. Two different projects coexist independently in one exhibition space: Yegor Plotnikov's 'Empty Place' and Gyungsu An's 'Membrane'. One generation artists, Yegor Plotnikov and Gyungsu An, who belong to different socio-cultural and geographical worlds, use the same concepts and try to answer similar questions: "What is a place? What is a landscape? How and why tensions emerge in the border areas between a city and its outskirts? What is the future of painting as a medium?".
Yegor Plotnikov participated in numerous exhibitions both in Russia and abroad, including the Metageography exhibition held in 2016 in the State Tretyakov Gallery. This exhibition continues the artist's projects devoted to landscape-walks.

The exhibition features a series of realistic paintings depicting ascetic and scantyCentral Russian landscapes in the spirit of the Barbizon painters and the Itinerants, combined with miniature anthropomorphic plastics. The exhibition will alternate both new canvases with large landscapes and very small fragments of landscapes.

The artist Gyungsu An took part in the group project EXTENSION.KR, which showed the contemporary South Korean art scene. The project was exhibited in 2016 in Moscow Triumph gallery, and then in the Nizhny Novgorod Arsenal.
Gyungsu An works with the theme of border areas, the placeswhich host a special tension between two different systems: cities and suburbs, two 'individualities', as the artist calls them.
