Fresh Layer
April 27 - August 27

Fresh Layer is a new large-scale exhibition at the Arsenal dedicated to relation of Nizhny Novgorod street art to folk traditions and decorative-applied art of the Nizhny Novgorod region.

Nizhny Novgorod street art is one of the iconic phenomena of the regional art scene. Formally belonging to street art, Nizhny Novgorod art is connected with the local cultural traditions and history to a greater extent than with the street subculture. Materials, techniques, images and motives in works of street artists reveal parallels with traditional culture. Some authors use certain methods and techniques as a part of sensible artistic strategy. While others, not referring to folk art directly, intuitively "absorb" its visual and conceptual qualities. For several years Moscow curator Anna Nistratova explored art and traditions of Nizhny Novgorod; in collaboration with artists she attempted to formulate basics of the local cultural identity.

Exposition of the Fresh Layer exhibition combines objects of folk craft, decorative-applied art and works of contemporary Nizhny Novgorod authors. Over 80 exhibits will be displayed at the exhibition, among them: painting, graphics, objects, sculpture, items of decorative-applied art, folk craft, old books, as well as installations created specifically for the exhibition. Each part of the exhibition is supplemented with an information stand with archive photographic materials from the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th century, photographic documentations of works of Nizhny Novgorod artists and texts about traditional and contemporary art of the Nizhny Novgorod region.
