Russia in VOGUE

20 November 2015 — 31 January 2016

15-year history of the number one fashion magazine VOGUE in Russia featuring reports, fashion-shooting footages and celebrity portraits

In 2013 VOGUE in Russia celebrated its fifteenth anniversary. As a part of the celebration the magazine realized a grand and ambitious project: special collector’s edition of the Russia in VOGUE was published in November 2013, followed up by a large-scale exhibition at Multimedia Art Museum in Moscow, in 2015 the exhibition is hosted by Arsenal.

For over a century of history of VOGUE in the world and fifteen years in Russia thousands of Russian faces and names have appeared on the pages of international “fashion bible”. The special edition of Russia in VOGUE features portraits of such famous Russians as Ida Rubinstein, Gala Dali, Joseph Brodsky, Vladimir Nabokov, Erte and Marc Chagall, as well as fashion-shooting footages and unique reports from the Iron Curtain period in the USSR shot by the great photographers. VOGUE will demonstrate how triumphantly Russian models took over the world, select works of Russian artists and designers which appeared on pages of the VOGUE international editions, and tell about the most significant designer collections inspired by Russia. In addition, the collector’s issue will include the best photos taken during the fifteen years history of the Russian VOGUE, which will also be included into exposition.

“I am proud of the fact that contemporary fashion is largely influenced by the Russians. ‘Diaghilev Seasons’ in Paris cultivate in the Europeans love to crazy colors. Great Russian duchesses who fled from the Bolsheviks taught European designers, beginning with Chanel, embroidery and ability to find the simple in the complex. Furthermore, the new Soviet Russia charged the best minds of the West with the electricity of constructivism. Look at the collection of Ralph Lauren fully inspired by ‘Anna Karenina’ and cadet uniform: “It is the Russian spirit; it smells of Russia here!” In the collector’s edition of VOGUE we gathered the best shots dedicated to Russia, its geniuses, beauties, fashion, art, nature and simple folk; these shots were taken by the classics of fashion photography for over a hundred years of VOGUE publishing history in Russia and other countries of the world. We will see it all at the Russia in VOGUE exhibition. Come and share my pride”, — says the chief editor of VOGUE Russia Victoria Davydova.

Curator of the Russia in VOGUE exhibition, featuring over a hundred photographs, is Olga Sviblova. Russia in VOGUE continues series of much-talked-of projects Dance in VOGUE and Nude in VOGUE.
