Weightlessness, project of a Moscow curator Elena Selina, united famous Russian artists of the 2000s. In September – October 2013 the project was presented at the Worker and the Collective Farm Woman museum and exhibition centre as a part of the 5th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, after which the exhibition traveled to Nizhny Novgorod.

Elena Selina compares contemporary art with gravity stress which a man suffers from experiencing weightlessness for the first time. In cosmonautics there are four major types of reaction to weightlessness: depression, passive waiting for the experiment’s end, tendency to adapt to the circumstances, and unexpected behavior. Analysis of works created by various artists for the last ten years reveals that the second type of reaction to the outside world tends to prevail – that is “suspension”, keeping ephemeral balance between a fall and a flight, hopeless anticipation of the end. It is belonging to this type that unites the works represented at the Arsenal.

The so-called “under the skirt” space (the Worker and the Collective Farm Woman museum and exhibition centre) became an integral part of the project, and the sculpture crowning the building – an embodiment of hovering and weightlessness. With video documentation arranged in a specific way, the Nizhny Novgorod viewers will have an opportunity to see and feel the atmosphere of the place.

The opening ceremony will take a place on November 15 at 19.00.
