“Mystification,” a Greco-Roman word adopted by European languages, originally meant “initiation into a sacrament”. Over time it took on a different meaning – a hoax, attribution to a certain object of supernatural properties, intentional deceit. Mystification as an art technique, known during various periods in history, becomes one of the dominating art practices in the 20th-21st centuries.

The Mystifiers exhibition at NCCA is built on the representation of a select series of works by different generation artists, whose art is characterized by the transformation of reality and creation of models of the non-existent. Demonstrating the mutations of the contemporary world, artists underline the importance of the legacy of the main 20th century trends – Dadaism, surrealism, conceptualism, simulationism – for art practices in the 21st century. The exhibition raises the topic of “mystification” through the works of such famous artists as Barbara Kruger, Damien Hirst, Bill Viola, Tony Matelli, Wim Delvoye, George Condo, Paul McCarthy, Tony Oursler, Yasumasa Morimura, Keiichi Tanaami, Peter Saul, Erwin Wurm and Joel-Peter Witkin. By using various art techniques, the art works presented in this project immerse the viewer in a surreal space of fantasy illusions, wonderful or terrible dreams, imaginary worlds and other-worldly “civilizations”.

The Mystifiers exhibition is created in cooperation with the Gary Tatintsian Gallery. The first part of the exhibition, Mutated Reality, is hosted by the Gary Tatintsian Gallery from November 26, 2015 to April 2, 2016. The exhibition includes works by Francis Bacon and Carroll Dunham, Chuck Close and Peter Saul, George Condo, KAWS and Malcolm Morley, installations by Mike Kelly and Tony Matelli.
